Beef Stew Bavarian-Style

Ingredients

2 pounds beef chuck cut in 1 inch cubes

2 tablespoons oil

2 cup water

2 medium onions, sliced

1 tablespoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1 bay leaf

1 1/2 teaspoons caraway seed

1/2 cup vinegar

2 tablespoons sugar

1 head red cabbage, cut in wedges

1/2 cup ginger snaps, broken

Directions

In heavy saucepan brown beef in oil.

Add next 6 ingredients and cook covered for one hour.

Add vinegar and sugar.

Top with cabbage wedges.

Cover and cook 45 minutes longer.

Remove cabbage.

Add gingersnaps to meat mixture and stir until thickened.

Pour stew onto large serving platter and arrange cabbage over stew.

Makes 8 servings.
