Vegetables French Baked

This is au gratin potatoes, not Potatoes Anna. I think we should rename it but technically this is my mom's recipe and she does not accept the distinction between this dish and the browned crispy potato dish called Potatoes Anna.
4 medium potatoes, sliced
1 onion, sliced
Salt and pepper
5 Tbsp butter or margarine, melted
Cheddar cheese, optional
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Layer ingredients as listed.
Cover well and bake 30 to 40 minutes.
Add optional cheese and broil until brown.
Makes 6 servings.
